OUR STORY

In 2009 we opened The Bikery, a community non-profit bike shop located less than half a mile from the East Oakland school where Cycles of Change began. The Bikery offers used bikes for sale, full-service repairs, earn-a-bike programs for youth, and Upcycle, an adult commuter program for low-income residents. Through these endeavors, we have built deep, multi-generational relationships with schools, community-based organizations, and families throughout East Oakland and Alameda County as a whole.

How we set our prices

The Bikery is committed to offering our bikes and services at deeply-affordable prices and informed by current trends in the Bay Area used-bicycle market. We work hard to find the sweet spot between offering low prices, paying our mechanics living-wages, fundraising for our awesome education programming, and meeting the budgetary needs of our customers. To help achieve this balance, we are proud to offer Sliding Scale Pricing on all bikes.

EVALUATE SIMILAR PRICES

  • We check similar non-profit bike shops and craigslist for quality & tuned-up bikes.
  • For higher-value items, we check Ebay and sell for about 25% cheaper.
  • We also adjust up for upgrades, and adjust down for damages and wear n tear.

ACCOUNT FOR PARTS & LABOR

  • Repairs take sweat, time, and the cost of parts. We fairly price to account for expenses.
  • Some lower-cost bikes cost more in parts and labor than what we sell for; we make up for this by selling more-valuable bikes at Fair Market Price.

WE RECYCLE!

  • We use recycled materials whenever possible – used tires, shifters, brake levers, etc!
  • We will only use these used parts if we feel confident in their quality.
  • We may end up using mis-matched parts to complete a bike to help keep the cost low.

WE GUARANTEE OUR LABOR

  • We inspect every bike, and repair bikes to a quality standard. Because we use Used parts, mechanical issues may arise.
  • We offer free-adjustments for the first month after a purchase. After that, customers may return for additional repairs at normal pricing.

SLIDING-SCALE

  • We offer a low- and high- amount for sales. We do this to help meet people’s budgetary needs and offer deeply-affordable prices, and also allow people to pay more to help support us in providing our education services to the community.

"AS-IS" PRICING

  • Bikes purchased “As-Is” are not eligible for returns or refunds, and the purchaser is fully responsible and liable for all repairs and warranty issues.
  • We sell these bikes and items at a lower price, but will only sell marginally-below Fair Market Value, with reasonable adjustments to cost based on wear and damages.

WHAT WE DO
