ABOUT: Entry Level Mountain Bikes are perfect for commuting to work, picking up a few groceries at the store, or a slow and casual ride on streets, paths, or well-managed dirt trails. These bikes will be heavier, clunkier, and slower than most other bikes, but most are stable-feeling, have nice wide tires that can handle even the worst streets, have near-indestructible frames, are cheap, and low-risk for getting stolen. Most can happily take a rack and fenders.

ABOUT: Entry Level Hybrid Bikes are great for going on a fun spin around the neighborhood or a few-mile ride to work. These bikes aim to be do-it-all bikes, while also having a big focus on comfort. These will probably have up-right handlebars, medium-wide tires, a good range of gears, and the ability to add a rack, fenders, and kickstand. Entry-level bikes will always be a little heavier and have cheaper parts than their fancier counterparts, so they might not be as ideal for biking up big hills or going on long rides, but most will last for years with only basic and routine maintenance.

ABOUT: Entry Level Road Bikes are also classically known as “Ten-Speeds”, and are characterized by sleek steel frames, skinny tires, and usually drop-down curved handlebars. These are designed to fit your body in a “sporty” position, aiming to be quick and aerodynamic, rolling over asphalt and concrete with ease and efficiency. Like this pictured Novara, we often replace the drop-bar handlebars with flat handlebars for better comfort, but you’ll see a variety of styles of these bikes at The Bikery!

ABOUT: Mid-Level Mountain Bikes are great do-it-all bikes – from riding on most trails to riding to work over pothole-filled streets, to throwing 40 lbs of gear on your rack and going camping at Samuel P Taylor state park! These bikes will generally have bigger tires, really reliable frames and components, and are easily modified to meet most demands, making them a perfect utility-vehicle. You probably won’t win any races on it though! Mid-Level Mountain Bikes are probably the most plentiful bike you’ll see almost anywhere – because they’re so reliable and affordable.

ABOUT: Mid-Level Hybrid Bikes are probably the most popular type of bike right now, and for a reason! Generally, these hit the sweet spot between fairly lightweight & good utility – aluminum frame, comfortable design, clearance for medium-wide tires, and excellent gear options. They can’t hit the same trails as their mountain-bike counterparts, and their comfort-design won’t be as aerodynamic and zippy as similar-level road bikes, but they’re a great jack-of-all-trades.

Sample: Miyata 512
Wheel Size: 700c Wheels
Frame: Triple-butted Cromoly
Speeds: 12
Components: Shimano Light Action
ABOUT: Mid-Level Road Bikes are the perfect entry point to the kinds of rides you might see in mainstream cycling media or rides like the Tour de France. They’re usually lighter-weight than similarly-leveled hybrid or mountain bikes, have decent gear options to help get you up the Oakland hills to Skyline Boulevard, and usually have drop-bars with multiple hand positions that are ideal for all-day rides. Many of them will be beautifully constructed, with sleek steel frames and gorgeous lugs, like this Miyata 512 from the 1980s. These bikes are also a great option if you’re trying to shave a few minutes off your bike-to-work route!

ABOUT: Nice-Level Mountain Bikes are the ideal bike for exploring all the beautiful and challenging mountain bike trails that the Bay Area has to offer – from the flow-trails at Camp Tamarancho in Marin, the singletracks at Joaquin Miller Park in the Oakland hills, or all the trails around Lake Chabot. Nice-Level Mountain Bikes will have high-quality frames, spec’ed with modest but highly-functional suspension-forks and components, to offer reliability without breaking the bank. These bikes are often great commuters, or easily outfitted to become bike packing adventure bikes.

ABOUT: Nice-Level Hybrid Bikes are like the hybrid-cars of the bicycle world. Just like the Mid-Level version, they have a good balance of weight, comfort, and versatility, but mainly differ by having higher-end components plus some “bells & whistles.” Many people seek these bikes for their light-weightiness if they have to carry their bike upstairs, have lots of hills on their commute, or want to splurge on nicer things for their daily ride.

ABOUT: Nice-Level Road Bikes are the types of bikes that people often stop you and say, “geez, nice bike!” These bikes will be swift, smooth, and lightweight, and many of them are beautiful and have plenty of evidence of their high-quality craftwork. The vintage version of Nice-Level Road Bikes will often be coveted by people who want to do restoration projects as hobbies, or people who want to have a beautiful bike to ride on a charity-ride century (100 miles). Modern versions will be constructed of aluminum and/or carbon fiber and will be laser-focused on speed and efficiency above all other considerations. The primary limitations of these bikes are that most are only compatible with skinny tires, and require the rider’s body to be locked into a “sporty” or “aggressive” posture.
